India Cricket begin new Test era without Kohli and Rohit

India’s tour of England starting on June 20, marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in India Cricket history. While the team has already seen major changes in T20Is the Test format is now entering a new phase too.

For the first time in many years India will play a Test Cricket without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both veterans are no longer part of the squad. With a new leader in Shubman Gill the series will be a real test for the young team.

Without Rohit at the top and Kohli in the middle order the team faces big decisions. Reports suggest that KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal could open the innings. Meanwhile, young Sai Sudharsan is likely to bat at number three. Captain Shubman Gill is expected to come in at number four.

However, former Australian captain and Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting has a different view.

Speaking on the **ICC Review**, Ponting said, “I think Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan should open. Sudharsan looks very composed and technically solid. He seems ready for Test cricket.”

He added, “Since both are quite young, India might prefer an experienced player at No. 3. That could be KL Rahul or even Karun Nair. Then Shubman Gill can settle in at No. 4. That might help him manage the captaincy better too.”

Ponting also mentioned that team decisions will likely be made after arriving in England. “They still have time. The team will play an intra-squad game and hold a 10-day training camp in London. They’ll finalize the batting order there.”

Shubman Gill, ahead of the team’s departure, shared his feelings about taking on the leadership role. “When I found out I had the chance to captain the Test team, it felt overwhelming. But it’s also a huge honor. I’m ready for the challenge and excited to lead the team.”

India now faces a big moment in its cricket history. With young players stepping in and a new captain at the helm, the England series could shape the future of the team.
