Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder thrilling battle for a spot in the Big Bash League final. Sydney Thunder secured a thrilling four-wicket win over Sydney Sixers in the Challenger match of the BBL 2024-25. England’s wicket keeper batter Sam Billings played an unbeaten 42 runs knock. Chasing a manageable total of 152 the Thunder crossed the line with seven balls to spare.

Three-time BBL champions Sydney Sixers stumbled early in their innings in Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder battle. Jack Edwards and Kurtis Patterson fell within the first four overs causing problems for Sixers early on. Joshua Phillipe’s run-out for 16 added to their trouble. Captain Moises Henriques 29 and Jordan Silk 43 stable the innings with a solid partnership. While playing a quickfire innings of 30 runs off 20 balls Ben Dwarshuis provided late momentum.

Despite these efforts Sydney Sixers were restricted to 151 due to disciplined bowling from the Thunder. Tom Andrews impressed with bowling figures of 2 for 15 in his 2 overs. While Wes Agar chipped in with 2 for 25 taking timely wickets to disrupt the Sixers flow.

Sam Billings who remained not out on 42 from just 29 deliveries batted at an impressive strike rate of 144.82. His innings included 2 fours and 2 sixes. Supporting knocks came from Jason Sangha 30 runs off 19 and Matthew Gilkes 26 off 22 balls. Despite Thunder skipper David Warner’s early departure for 11 Sangha and Gilkes built a crucial 36 run stand for the third wicket build the rhythm for the chase.

Billings then stitched two vital partnerships a 28 run stand with Hugh Weibgen for the fourth wicket and another 28 runs with Chris Green for the fifth. Billings held his nerves to keep the chase on track. Nathan McAndrew added fireworks towards the end smashing 19 runs off just seven balls including 2 fours and 1 six to seal the victory.

This victory marks Sydney Thunder’s first trip to the BBL final since their victorious campaign in 2015-16 under Michael Hussey’s leadership. They will now face the Hobart Hurricanes in the much-anticipated final on Sunday, January 26, at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
