Australia vs South Africa 1st Test highlights

Australia Crush South Africa by 214 Runs in the 1st Test as Hazlewood and Renshaw Shine.

Australia secured a commanding 214-run victory over South Africa in the opening Test, taking a valuable lead in the series. Josh Hazlewood delivered a career-best performance with the ball, while Matt Renshaw starred with both bat and ball.

The visitors showed greater consistency across all four innings. In contrast, South Africa struggled to build substantial partnerships and failed to chase a daunting target of 421 runs.

The defeat also marked Temba Bavuma’s first loss as South Africa’s Test captain.

Australia’s bowlers laid the foundation for victory with a disciplined performance in the first innings. However, Josh Hazlewood stole the spotlight when the match reached its decisive stage.

The fast bowler claimed a career-best six wickets for 49 runs in the final innings. He dismantled South Africa’s batting order and prevented the hosts from mounting a serious challenge.

Hazlewood attacked both the top and lower order. Consequently, South Africa lost wickets at crucial moments and struggled to maintain any momentum in the 1st Test against Australia.

His outstanding spell capped an impressive collective effort from Australia’s bowling unit. Together, the attack kept the pressure on South Africa and brought the visitors closer to a comprehensive win.

South Africa’s batting problems began in the first innings. Aiden Markram and David Bedingham made promising starts but failed to convert them into major scores.

The middle order offered some resistance. Nevertheless, no batter apart from Bedingham reached 40 in the innings.

The hosts faced an even tougher challenge in their pursuit of 421 runs. Once again, their top order failed to establish a solid foundation.

Bedingham crossed into the 40s but fell before making a decisive contribution. Meanwhile, Markram took responsibility for keeping South Africa in the contest.

On the fifth morning, Markram and Wiaan Mulder appeared to give the hosts some hope. The pair showed resilience during the opening session and attempted to rebuild the innings.

However, Mulder’s dismissal triggered another collapse. South Africa lost control as Australia’s bowlers exploited the opening.

Markram eventually departed after facing 237 deliveries for his determined 75. His resistance could not prevent a heavy defeat, as the hosts failed to cope with Australia’s relentless attack.

Matt Renshaw proved instrumental in Australia’s victory. The left-handed batter delivered a superb 190 in the first innings, rescuing his side after an uncertain start.

Australia had entered the match with a new opening combination and questions surrounding their middle order. However, Renshaw’s innings helped address those concerns.

He steadied the innings before accelerating the scoring. As a result, Australia moved from a difficult position to one of strength.

Renshaw continued his excellent form in the third innings. He smashed another 82 runs, helping Australia extend their advantage beyond 400.

Moreover, he contributed with the ball during South Africa’s final innings, claiming two important wickets. His all-round display made him one of the defining performers of the match.

Australia will take considerable encouragement from his performance, particularly as they look to establish greater stability in their batting line-up.

The result brings back memories of Australia’s dominant victory over South Africa in the opening Test at Durban in 2018. That series became notorious for controversy, but Australia’s latest success has been built on a commanding performance on the field.

The 214-run margin gives the visitors a strong start to the current series. However, South Africa still have two Tests remaining to respond.

The hosts will need significant improvements from their batting unit. They must also find ways to counter Australia’s pace attack and build partnerships under pressure.

For now, Australia look the more settled side after winning 1st Test from South Africa. Renshaw has strengthened their batting options, while Hazlewood has demonstrated his ability to decide a Test with a devastating spell.

South Africa have time to recover, but the opening defeat leaves them with plenty of work ahead. Australia, meanwhile, will aim to carry this momentum into the next Test and tighten their grip on the series.
