The visitors continued to move steadily. By the 20th over, they had reached 84/2 and remained firmly in contention. Kusal Mendis contributed 42.
Dunith Wellalage then became Sri Lanka’s leading scorer with 45. However, the chase changed dramatically once the pair departed. Sri Lanka’s middle and lower order could not maintain the momentum.
Wickets began to fall in quick succession. The visitors struggled to find partnerships when they needed them most.
England’s bowlers kept attacking and refused to allow Sri Lanka back into the game. The collapse eventually left Sri Lanka all out for 176.
England’s attack delivered a disciplined performance after the batters had provided a solid platform. Almost the entire bowling unit contributed to the victory.
Jofra Archer was the only bowler mentioned as not contributing a wicket, while the rest helped close out the innings. England therefore secured an 89-run win.
