India secured a convincing victory over Sri Lanka in the 1st Test, winning by a comfortable margin to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The result also gave Shubman Gill’s side an important boost in the race for the World Test Championship final.
The hosts fought hard at different stages. However, India maintained control for most of the contest and eventually closed out the game on the fifth day.
India won the toss and chose to bat first. The visitors made the most of the opportunity as Sri Lanka struggled to create sustained pressure with the ball. Devdutt Padikkal grabbed his chance at No. 3. He produced his maiden Test century and continued on to a superb 167.
KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel also made valuable contributions. As a result, India posted a formidable 462. Sri Lanka faced early problems in 1st Test in their first innings against India. India reduced them to 90/5 and appeared ready to take complete control.
However, Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella changed the momentum. The pair added 146 runs to rescue the innings. Dickwella scored 80. Meanwhile, Dinusha reached his maiden Test hundred.
Their partnership helped Sri Lanka avoid the follow-on. Nevertheless, India still secured a significant 178-run first-innings advantage. India’s second innings proved more difficult than the first. Sri Lanka kept finding wickets and prevented the visitors from running away with the game.
Devdutt Padikkal and KL Rahul got starts but could not turn them into major scores. Rishabh Pant, however, provided the attacking spark India needed. Once Pant departed, the Indian lower order could not add many more runs. Still, their first-innings advantage proved decisive.
India eventually set Sri Lanka a daunting target of 372. The chase quickly became a major challenge. Sri Lanka slipped to 47/4 late on the fourth day. Dinesh Chandimal was also ruled out after suffering a concussion, while replacement Pasindu Sooriyabandara fell for a first-ball duck.
Dhananjaya de Silva received a reprieve when a potential catch was affected by Ravindra Jadeja’s foot position. The Sri Lankan captain survived and continued the fight. On the fifth morning, Dhananjaya and Dinusha offered some resistance. India, however, refused to panic. Instead, the visitors kept bowling in disciplined areas and waited for errors. Eventually, the wickets arrived.
Dhananjaya was dismissed first. Niroshan Dickwella followed soon after. Dinusha then found himself fighting alongside the tail. His resistance finally ended, effectively ending Sri Lanka’s hopes of saving the match. India’s victory was built around discipline rather than desperation.
The visitors resisted the urge to attack blindly for wickets. Instead, they maintained pressure and trusted the pitch to create opportunities. KL Rahul later praised that approach. He noted that the surface remained competitive throughout the five days and rewarded batters who arrived with a clear plan.
He also highlighted Dinusha’s innings as an example of how patience and good footwork could succeed against spin. The results of 1st Test gives India a 1-0 advantage in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. It was also a significant victory in Sri Lanka’s 600th Test match.
Sri Lanka showed plenty of character, particularly through Dinusha and Dickwella. However, India’s superior first-innings performance and disciplined bowling ultimately proved too strong.
With one match remaining, India now have the upper hand in the series and another important win in their pursuit of a place in the World Test Championship final.
