Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh by 32 runs in the 1st T20 at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo. Zimbabwe made a winning start to the T20I series with a convincing victory over Bangladesh, taking a 1-0 lead in front of their home crowd. A disciplined bowling display, led by Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani, proved too strong for the visitors as Zimbabwe defended a competitive total with authority.
After being asked to bat first, Zimbabwe began aggressively.
Brian Bennett gave the innings early momentum with a lively 44 from just 30 deliveries, putting Bangladesh’s bowlers under pressure during the Powerplay.
The visitors responded well through the middle overs. They slowed the scoring rate and picked up regular wickets to halt Zimbabwe’s progress.
Ryan Burl then played an important finishing role with an unbeaten 30 off 25 balls. Brad Evans added valuable late runs with an attacking cameo, helping the hosts post a competitive total of 170.
Nahid Rana was Bangladesh’s standout performer with the ball. He claimed four wickets and regularly troubled the batters with his pace. However, an expensive final over, which conceded 18 runs, allowed Zimbabwe to add crucial runs. Mohammad Saifuddin supported him with two wickets, while Taskin Ahmed bowled economically. The spin attack, however, struggled throughout the innings and proved costly.
Bangladesh’s chase never settled after a disastrous start.
Richard Ngarava struck twice in the same over to remove both openers before Blessing Muzarabani added another wicket, reducing the visitors to 34 for 3 inside the Powerplay.
Although Bangladesh attempted to rebuild but Zimbabwe bowlers never allowed them to gain full control in 1st T20.
Milton Shumba made an immediate impact after entering the attack, helping shift the momentum back towards the hosts.
Once Ngarava dismissed the well-set Yasir Ali, Bangladesh’s hopes faded quickly.
The pace duo dominated the closing stages. Ngarava finished with outstanding figures of 4 for 26, while Muzarabani returned 4 for 17. Together, they ripped through the lower order as Bangladesh lost their final five wickets for just eight runs.
Despite the early collapse, Yasir Ali gave Bangladesh hope with a composed return to the 1st T20 side against Zimbabwe.
He shared a 39-run partnership with captain Towhid Hridoy before Hridoy departed at a crucial stage. Soon after, a costly mix-up led to Nurul Hasan’s dismissal, increasing the pressure.
Yasir remained calm and completed a well-earned half-century. He then added another valuable 52 runs alongside Mahedi Hasan to keep the chase alive.
However, with 41 runs still required, both Yasir and Mahedi fell in quick succession. Their dismissals left the lower order with an impossible task and Bangladesh’s innings quickly came to an end.
The victory gives Zimbabwe a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series and continues their impressive run against Bangladesh.
After already enjoying success in the ODI series, the hosts once again handled the key moments better and produced another disciplined team performance.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, will need a much stronger batting display in the remaining matches if they hope to keep the series alive. With confidence growing inside the Zimbabwe camp, the hosts now sit just one win away from claiming another series victory over Bangladesh.
