Australia have won the 2nd ODI from Bangladesh by just 1 wicket and 3 balls to left. Australia survived a dramatic scare in Dhaka to secure a thrilling victory over Bangladesh, thanks largely to a magnificent innings from Cooper Connolly. The visitors appeared to be cruising toward victory before Bangladesh launched a remarkable late comeback that nearly turned the match on its head.
In the end Australia held their nerve and crossed the finish line denying the hosts a historic series sweep.
Earlier, Bangladesh posted a challenging score after several batters made valuable contributions.
Towhid Hridoy played the leading role with a superb 83-run knock. He paced his innings brilliantly and kept the scoreboard moving throughout the middle overs. His efforts provided the platform for a strong finish.
Litton Das and Mosaddek Hossain also produced important half-centuries. Together the trio helped Bangladesh build a total that put pressure on the Australian batting lineup.
However, the hosts may feel they missed an opportunity to add extra runs in the closing stages. A stronger finish could have pushed the target even higher.
Australia’s bowlers remained disciplined despite the challenging conditions. Ben Dwarshuis, Matt Renshaw and Xavier Bartlett all contributed with wickets while the visitors tightened their grip during the final overs.
Australia’s reply started positively. More importantly they finally managed to put together a solid opening partnership after several matches of early setbacks.
Even when two wickets fell quickly Cooper Connolly remained calm. The opener took responsibility and guided the chase with a mature and commanding performance.
He first combined with Alex Carey to steady the innings before building two more crucial partnerships with Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green. Later, Oliver Peake joined him in another valuable stand that pushed Australia closer to victory.
Connolly’s innings stood out for both control and aggression. He reached a brilliant century and continued to dominate the bowling attack as the target came within sight.
His three consecutive sixes against Taskin Ahmed in the closing stages appeared to put Australia firmly in command.
Just when the 2nd ODI against Australia looked over, Bangladesh fought back.
Australia needed only nine more runs with five wickets in hand. However, the dismissal of Oliver Peake triggered a dramatic collapse.
Shoriful Islam produced a sensational spell and ripped through the lower order. The left-arm pacer claimed three quick wickets and suddenly brought Bangladesh back into the contest.
Mustafizur Rahman then removed the well-set Connolly increasing the pressure even further. Australia slipped from a position of comfort to the brink of disaster as wickets tumbled rapidly.
Shoriful finished with outstanding figures of 6 for 38, the best bowling performance of his ODI career.
Bangladesh’s bowlers gave their team a genuine opportunity to complete an incredible turnaround. However, a couple of missed catches at crucial moments allowed Australia to stay alive.
Those missed opportunities eventually proved expensive. With the tension at its highest Adam Zampa remained composed and guided Australia over the line.
Although Australia celbrated the victory, the match exposed several vulnerabilities in their batting lineup. Nevertheless they found a way to win when it mattered most.
For Bangladesh the defeat in the 2nd ODI against Australia will hurt. Yet the hosts can take pride in their fighting spirit and bowling performance, especially the efforts of Shoriful Islam.
Ultimately Connolly’s remarkable innings laid the foundation for Australia’s success. His match-winning knock helped the visitors survive one of the most dramatic finishes seen in recent ODI cricket and prevented Bangladesh from completing a memorable whitewash.
