South Africa have won the Final of Tri-series from Zimbabwe by 48 runs. Jordan Hermann stars as Proteas overcome early scare to finish the series as champions. South Africa ended their tri-series campaign on a high.
A second-string Proteas side defeated Zimbabwe after putting together a strong batting display. The result also secured the trophy for Bjorn Fortuin’s team.
With Lhuan-dre Pretorius unavailable, Jordan Hermann moved up the order.
He responded brilliantly.
Hermann recorded his maiden T20I half-century and helped South Africa build a solid platform. He shared an 84-run opening partnership, giving the Proteas early control.
Zimbabwe did manage to break through during the middle overs in the Final of Tri-series against South Africa. However, South Africa kept the scoreboard moving.
Dewald Brevis, Rubin Hermann and Duan Jansen then added useful runs. Their efforts pushed the Proteas to 205, giving Zimbabwe a demanding target of 206.
Zimbabwe’s chase began badly. Duan Jansen and Eathan Bosch quickly attacked the top order. Their pressure paid off as Zimbabwe lost four wickets during the Powerplay.
That left the hosts facing a steep climb. Still, Zimbabwe had shown during the series that they could recover from difficult situations. Unfortunately, Ryan Burl and Sikandar Raza could not produce the long innings their team needed.
Brad Evans became Zimbabwe’s main hope. He kept attacking and refused to give up. However, the lack of support at the other end made his task almost impossible.
Evans continued fighting until the closing stages. Yet Zimbabwe could not produce the late surge required to chase down the target.
South Africa therefore completed the victory and finished their campaign with the trophy.
South Africa’s journey to the title did not begin smoothly. They suffered defeat against Namibia at the start of the tri-series. However, Fortuin’s side quickly recovered.
From there, the Proteas showed greater consistency and produced enough quality with both bat and ball to go all the way.
Zimbabwe also had several strong moments throughout the competition. Their players challenged both South Africa and Namibia at different stages.
However, inconsistency proved costly. South Africa, in contrast Zimbabwe, found a way to turn key moments of Final of Tri-series into a victoriey. That ultimately made the difference.
