Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond has raised serious concerns about the India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah injury. He warned that another injury to the same area could end Bumrah’s career.
Bumrah’s Recent Injury Concerns
Bumrah played a key role in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup victory last year. However he missed the recently concluded Champions Trophy due to a back injury. The injury occurred during the 5 match Test series against Australia.
Currently Bumrah is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. His participation in the upcoming IPL remains uncertain.
Shane Bond’s Warning
Bond who struggled with back injuries himself emphasized the need for careful workload management. He expressed concerns that another injury in the same area could be career ending.
“When he went for scans in Sydney there were reports of a sprain. I worried it might be something more serious possibly a bony injury” Bond told.
He highlighted the challenges of transitioning from T20 cricket to Test matches especially with India’s demanding schedule.
IPL and England Tour: A Tough Balance
India’s five Test tour of England begins on June 28 barely a month after the IPL ends on May 25. Bond believes this transition is risky for Bumrah.
“Coming straight from IPL into Test cricket is a huge jump. In T20s bowlers don’t deliver as many overs and there’s limited back-to-back workload. That transition needs careful planning” he added.
Bond suggested limiting Bumrah to no more than two consecutive Test matches in England. He believes managing Bumrah’s workload is key to prolonging his career.
Uncertainty over IPL 2025 Participation
Jasprit Bumrah is expected to miss the first few IPL matches for Mumbai Indians (MI) as he continues his injury. MI starts their campaign on March 23 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) followed by matches against Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 29 and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 31. His return depends on clearance from the BCCI medical team.
Managing Bumrah’s Future
Jasprit Bumrah has battled back injury before. He underwent surgery in March 2023. His unique bowling action makes him more susceptible to such issues.
The BCCI selectors and team management must carefully manage his workload. Bond stressed that open communication is crucial. Bumrah and the decision makers must work together to ensure his long term fitness.
“Players want to play every game but sometimes they need to compromise. It’s about balancing short term success with long term sustainability,” Bond said.
Bumrah remains one of India’s most valuable assets. His fitness will be crucial for the upcoming international tournaments. Careful planning and workload management will determine how long he can continue at the highest level.
