South Africa have won the 6th T20 of Tri-series from Namibia by just 11 runs. Pretorius’ maiden T20I century powers Proteas before Namibia mount a stunning fightback. South Africa secured a place in the tri-series final after surviving a huge challenge from Namibia in a thrilling contest.
The Proteas dominated the opening half of the match. However, Namibia responded with an impressive chase and pushed the game deep into the final stages. In the end, South Africa held their nerve when it mattered most. South Africa’s openers gave the innings a flying start.
Connor Esterhuizen and Lhuan-dre Pretorius attacked the Namibian bowling from the outset. The pair added a massive 156 runs for the opening wicket. Namibia also missed opportunities in the field. Those mistakes allowed the South African batters to continue their assault.
Pretorius was the standout performer. He reached his maiden T20I century in spectacular fashion. The left-hander cleared the ropes eight times during a powerful innings.
South Africa appeared to be heading towards a comfortable finish. Yet Namibia refused to surrender. After the explosive opening stand, Namibia managed to slow the scoring in the 6th T20 of Tri-series against South Africa.
Dewald Brevis and Rubin Hermann struggled to find their rhythm. As a result, South Africa could not maintain the same scoring rate throughout the closing overs.
Still, the damage from the opening partnership had already given the Proteas a strong platform.
Namibia needed a disciplined bowling effort earlier in the innings. Instead, their attack struggled to make regular breakthroughs. Namibia began their chase with tremendous confidence.
The opening pair of Frylinck and Steenkamp attacked the South African bowlers and raced through the Powerplay without losing a wicket. Both batters reached half-centuries. Together, they built a commanding 119-run partnership.
South Africa eventually found a breakthrough in the 6th T20 of Tri-series against Namibia through Simelane. That wicket gave the Proteas some breathing room. However, Steenkamp continued to push the chase alongside captain Gerhard Erasmus.
South Africa then tightened their bowling. The pressure increased the required rate and made Namibia’s task considerably tougher.
Steenkamp was later forced to retire hurt after taking a couple of painful blows. Despite the setback, Erasmus and Ruben Trumpelmann kept Namibia’s hopes alive.
The chase went down to the wire. Namibia ultimately finished just short of the target. Although South Africa earned the win, the performance exposed several weaknesses.
Their bowling attack struggled to consistently trouble Namibia’s batters. Nqobani Mokoena stood out with two wickets, but he also conceded plenty of runs. The fielding was another concern.
South Africa usually set high standards in the field, but several chances went down during the match. Those errors allowed Namibia to stay in contention for much longer than expected. The result was particularly painful for Namibia because it marked their first-ever T20I defeat against South Africa.
They showed tremendous character during the chase. Even when the required rate climbed, they continued to attack. South Africa, meanwhile, will be relieved to have escaped with the victory.
The Proteas have now qualified for the tri-series final. Nevertheless, their bowling and fielding will need significant improvement before the title decider.
Namibia can take plenty of confidence from their performance. They pushed a strong South African side to the limit and showed they can compete with the Proteas at this level.
