Day 3 of WTC Final, Proteas stay calm as historic Win nears

The Proteas need only 69 more runs to win the World Test Championship Final at the end of Day 3 of WTC Final, their first ICC men’s title since 1998. South Africa assistant coach Ashwell Prince has called for calm as his team stands just steps away from a famous Test victory.

Despite the high stakes Prince said the team feels no pressure. He believes they are focused and in control. “We spoke before the chase,” Prince said. “The match will end when it ends. Whether it’s tomorrow before lunch or later, we don’t need to rush. Our job is to stay focused one ball at a time.”

Prince praised AidenMarkram and Temba Bavuma, who put South Africa in a winning position. The pair added a crucial 143-run unbeaten stand, putting South Africa just 69 runs away from the target with eight wickets in hand.

Markram ended the day on 102 not out. Prince described him as a player who shines on big occasions. “He’s shown before, even in tough conditions, that he can play long, important innings,” Prince said. “We know what he can do. This hundred proves his value again.”

Captain Bavuma, playing with an injury, stood firm and finished the day on 65 not out. Prince admired his courage and determination. “He’s fought his whole career. This might be a turning point for him,” Prince said. “It shows his character.”

Earlier in the day, South Africa needed just two wickets to finish Australia’s second innings. But Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood made life tough. They added 59 runs for the final wicket, delaying South Africa’s charge.

Even though that session went in Australia’s favour, Prince saw positives. “We felt some frustration the ball kept falling short of the slips,” he explained. “But when it’s our turn to bat, maybe we’ll get similar luck. The sun was out and Australia’s tail looked comfortable. That suggests Day 3 of WTC Final might be the best time to bat.”

Prince also spoke about South Africa’s team spirit. He said the players are united and that makes them stronger. “Our strength is in how close we are,” Prince said. “Even if we don’t have as many big names as past South African teams we support each other.”

He gave credit to head coach Shukri Conrad for creating a calm and focused dressing room. “Shukri deserves praise. He keeps everyone grounded. Just watch how Tristan Stubbs celebrates a wicket  that shows the bond in this team.”

As the Proteas head into Day 4, the goal is clear. With 69 runs left and eight wickets in hand South Africa are in touching distance of lifting the WTC 2025 trophy. At the end of Day 3 of WTC Final Prince’s message to the players remains simple stay calm, stay focused and finish the job.
