South African Batter David Bedingham believes the Proteas are in a strong position after a solid performance on Day 2 of WTC Final. South Africa are feeling confident as they prepare for a final-innings chase in the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s.
Fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi played a major role in swinging the match back South Africa’s way. The pair shared six wickets and put Australia under pressure. At stumps, Australia were 144/8 in their second innings of Day 2 of WTC Final. They held a lead of just 218 runs.
Now, South Africa need to take the last two Australian wickets on Day 3. Then, they’ll begin their chase one that Bedingham believes is very possible.
“We’re feeling confident,” Bedingham said after play on Thursday.
“The batters have their plans ready. It could go either way, but there’s strong belief in our dressing room.”
History also gives the Proteas hope. At Lord’s, teams have chased over 250 runs to win a Test on three occasions. Two of those successful chases happened in the 2000s.
Bedingham is expected to play a key role in the run chase. He was one of the few batters who looked comfortable in the tough conditions. The Lord’s pitch has helped bowlers throughout the match, making every run valuable.
In South Africa’s first innings Bedingham scored 45 runs from 111 balls on Day 2 of WTC Final. He showed patience and skill during his stay at the crease. After the day’s play, he shared some simple but important advice for his teammates.
“Whether you’re defending or attacking, commit fully,” he said.
“If you’re stuck between choices against this kind of bowling, you’ll get out. So it’s all about 100% commitment.”
South Africa believe they have a real chance to win the “Ultimate Test.” With Australia struggling and the pitch offering help to bowlers, the match remains evenly balanced. The Proteas however are upbeat. If they bowl well early on Day 3 and bat with focus a historic win at Lord’s could be theirs.
