New Zealand won the toss and decided to bowl first. South African opener Matthew Breetzke made history on his ODI debut. He scored a record breaking 150 runs against New Zealand in Lahore. This incredible performance came during the ongoing tri-series. Breetzke’s innings helped South Africa post a strong total of 304/6. He broke a 46 year old record previously held by Desmond Haynes who scored 148 on his ODI debut in 1978.

Breetzke’s knock was a mix of patience, power and elegance. He hit 11 boundaries and five sixes. His half-century came off 68 balls and he reached his century in 128 deliveries. He showed excellent technique against both spin and pace. This adaptability came after his recent SA T20 campaign.

With this innings Breetzke became the fourth South African to score an ODI century on debut. He joined an elite group including Colin Ingram, Reeza Hendricks and current captain Temba Bavuma. Ingram previously held South Africa’s debut record with 124 runs against Zimbabwe in 2010.

Breetzke accelerated in the later part of his innings. He smashed boundaries off Ben Sears and Will O’Rourke. His partnerships with Jason Smith (41) and Wiaan Mulder (64) were crucial. Together they built a strong platform for South Africa’s total.

Breetzke’s 150-run milestone is now the highest individual score on ODI debut. His performance highlights South Africa’s ability to produce world class batters. It also marks a memorable start to his international career.

While chasing a good total of 304 Will Young dismissed on 19 and New Zealand were 50 for one after first 10 overs. Williamson and Conway take the lead as Conway fell 3 runs short of his century.  He remains not out on 133 and New Zealand win the game by 6 wickets and 8 balls left.
