Saim Ayub, a young Pakistani cricketer, has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 because of an ankle injury. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi confirmed the news, saying the batter needs more time to recover fully.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sent Ayub to London for advanced treatment, accompanied by assistant coach Azhar Mahmood. PCB officials have expressed their commitment to supporting Ayub’s recovery. “Saim is a valuable player for Pakistan. We are providing him with the best possible care and hope for his speedy recovery,” said PCB Chairperson MohsinNaqvi.
Afridi shared updates about Ayub’s recovery after speaking to him. “Saim said he will need three more weeks before starting rehabilitation. I advised him to take his time and recover completely because an incomplete recovery can lead to long-term issues,” Afridi said.
Ayub sustained the injury during the first day of the Cape Town Test against South Africa. Initially, he was expected to be out for six weeks. He is currently receiving treatment in London, where his condition is being further evaluated.
The injury will also prevent Ayub from playing in Pakistan’s upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies and a tri-nation series featuring New Zealand and South Africa.
The PCB has not yet announced a provisional squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, 2025. The final squad will be submitted to the International Cricket Council (ICC) after February 11, based on updates about Ayub’s fitness.
Saim Ayub, 22, is considered one of Pakistan’s most promising cricketers. Since making his international debut against Afghanistan in March 2023, he has played 44 matches for Pakistan. His performances in ODIs include three centuries and one half-century in just nine games.
Ayub played a key role in Pakistan’s 3-0 ODI series win over South Africa in 2024. He scored two centuries during the series and was named Player of the Series. His aggressive yet consistent batting style has made him one of the standout players for Pakistan in recent years.
Saim Ayub absence is seen as a significant loss for the Pakistan team ahead of the Champions Trophy. However, the PCB remains hopeful for his complete recovery and a strong return to international cricket.
