Key players in the opening match of Champions Trophy 2025.
Babar Azam, Pakistan’s star batter, has gone 21 innings without an ODI century. For most players, this might not be unusual but Babar sets high standards. Despite this he has rarely struggled with only two single digit scores in this period. Now opening the batting instead of playing at No. 3 a big score from him would boost Pakistan’s confidence.
One Day Internationals (ODIs) often struggle for attention. Test cricket earns respect for its tradition while T20s grab the spotlight with fast paced action. However, every four years the ODI format reminds fans of its excitement during global tournaments. The last two ODI World Cups delivered unforgettable matches and showcased the format’s unique mix of patience and intensity.
With limited ODI action in the past 18 months anticipation for the format is high. The Champions Trophy, despite its awkward scheduling, returns after eight years. Many may have forgotten about it since Sarfaraz Ahmed lifted the trophy in 2017. Now Pakistan the defending champions and partial hosts will begin the tournament against a familiar opponent New Zealand.
No visiting team has played more ODIs in Pakistan recently than New Zealand. Since 2019 they have played 11 matches in the country. They also won an ODI tri-series final against Pakistan just five days ago. Karachi hosted that match and will host this one too. Both teams have been consistent yet flawed in recent ICC tournaments. They finished fourth and fifth in the league stages of both the 2019 and 2023 World Cups. Pakistan however won both of their World Cup meetings. This balance of strength and inconsistency makes their clash a fitting start to the Champions Trophy.
New Zealand’s spinners Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell performed exceptionally in the recent tri-series. Their combined economy rate was 4.41 much better than Pakistan’s (5.67) and South Africa’s (5.94). Both are reliable all rounder’s making them a key asset for New Zealand.
Pakistan’s fast bowler Haris Rauf missed the tri-series due to a side strain but has been training in the nets. Captain Mohammad Rizwan expects him to be fit for the opening match. If available, Pakistan will have a full strength squad for the tournament opener.
These are some key players in the opening match of Champions Trophy 2025. The Champions Trophy is back, and Pakistan vs New Zealand promises an exciting start.
