Veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews retires from International Test Cricket. He played his 100th and final Test match in Galle against Bangladesh the same ground where he made his debut back in 2009.
Mathews is the second-highest run scorer at this historic venue. He scored 2,253 runs in 34 Tests at Galle.
After the match, Mathews reflected on the drawn Test and his farewell from red-ball cricket.
“When you post 400 in the first innings, it’s hard to lose. We needed to bat well to stay in the game,” he said.
“We fought hard and reduced the lead. Shanto played outstandingly in both innings.”
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led from the front with scores of 148 and an unbeaten 125. His brilliant batting earned him the Player of the Match award.
Mathews also shared his thoughts on the conditions.
“It was tough for bowlers. There was some turn, but not much help overall,” he explained.
“We tried to push for a win, but it didn’t work out.”
Though Mathews retires from Test, He is not done with international cricket just yet. He has his eyes on one last goal the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026.
“I’ve got six more months. I’ll give it everything I have,” Mathews said.
“Winning a World Cup would be the perfect way to finish. I’ll see how my body holds up.”
Mathews was part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2014 T20 World Cup by defeating India in the final. Now, at 38, he hopes to repeat that success.
He also spoke about the emotional support he’s received since announcing his Test retirement.
“It’s been overwhelming. The love I’ve felt has been incredible,” he said.
“When you give everything for your country, the appreciation means so much. I’m truly grateful.”
Mathews retires from Test cricket but he will still be available for Sri Lanka in white-ball formats. His experience and skill will continue to be a key part of the team as they move forward.
