Namibia produced a stunning upset in Windhoek, they defeated South Africa by 18 runs in a dramatic 1st T20 of the tri-series.
After posting 163 for 9, the hosts defended their total with excellent discipline. South Africa, meanwhile, struggled to build partnerships throughout the chase.
Namibia began their innings with real intent. Their openers added 84 runs and raced to 57 without losing a wicket during the Powerplay.
A total beyond 200 looked possible. However, South Africa’s spinners changed the course of the innings.
Prenelan Subrayen and Bjorn Fortuin repeatedly struck through the middle order. As a result, Namibia lost wickets regularly and finished on 163 for 9.
The hosts had work to do with the ball.
Namibia’s bowlers responded brilliantly. Ruben Trumpelmann set the tone with an excellent spell and finished with 3 for 24.
JJ Smit also made a major impact. His variations earned him 3 for 31.
Gerhard Erasmus and Max Heingo supported the pace attack with economical spells. Together, they kept South Africa’s lower order under control.
South Africa’s chase began poorly. Both openers fell inside the first four overs.
Dewald Brevis then launched a remarkable counterattack. He smashed 75 from only 50 balls, including five sixes.
His innings briefly gave the Proteas hope. However, Brevis received little support from the other end.
Once he departed in the 18th over, South Africa’s chances faded quickly.
The final over produced one last twist.
South Africa needed a huge finish to stay alive. A six early in the over briefly raised hopes of an unlikely comeback.
Smit remained composed under pressure. He then struck twice in the final two deliveries to close out the match.
Namibia erupted in celebration as the final wicket fell.

It was a superb all-round performance from the hosts. Their spinners helped restrict Namibia’s own total earlier, but the seamers and variations of Trumpelmann and Smit ultimately decided the contest.
For South Africa, Brevis’ outstanding effort went unrewarded.
For Namibia, however, this victory sends an early warning to the rest of the tournament.
